Statement on Supreme Court Order on Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP)

On Tuesday night, Aug. 24, the U.S. Supreme Court issued an order that effectively reinstates the Migrant Protection Protocols, or MPP. Commonly referred to as the “remain in Mexico” policy, MPP is largely responsible (along with Title 42, which facilitates expulsion based on COVID fears) for migrants being forced to assemble at the U.S.-Mexico border to await their opportunity to make an asylum claim in immigration court.

The policy provides Mexican cartels with a large population of migrants they can kidnap and abuse. It also transfers responsibility for protecting these vulnerable neighbors from the richest country on earth to impoverished communities and exhausted pastors and church members.

Fellowship Southwest supports the Biden administration’s attempt to repeal MPP and condemns this ruling. We will continue to support our network of pastors, churches and ministries that embody biblical hospitality and welcome to vulnerable and desperate migrants. We also commit to advocate for just policies that recognize the God-given dignity of migrants, uphold our American tradition of providing refuge for the persecuted, and align with our biblical values of loving our neighbor and welcoming the stranger.
