On Sept. 7, I was blessed to join 18 other pastors, ministers and faith leaders from the Southwest and beyond for a three-day retreat at the beautiful Mary and Joseph Retreat Center in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.

Set among green gardens on a hilltop overlooking the lights of Los Angeles and just a few miles from the coast, it was the perfect location for quiet reflection and building relationships. 

The retreat was light on programming and focused on free time and fellowship. Each day, we gathered in the morning for a time of devotion, prayer and reflection. Each evening, we engaged in discussion based on topics suggested by the group. We remembered our baptisms, shared the stresses and struggles of Christian leadership in these times, and offered prayers and words of encouragement. We discussed our fears and hopes for the future of the church. 

We also enjoyed walks on the beach, meals by the shore, good coffee, afternoon naps, wine in the evening, walking the prayer labyrinth and the lights of Hollywood. 

The retreat provided the freedom to do what each of us needed to feel a bit recharged and renewed. I heard one pastor say, "It was great to come and not be in charge of anything." 

I'm grateful CBF recognized the need of our pastoral leaders, covered the costs of the retreat and provided a program outline. Thanks to CBF West Coordinator Glen Foster, who found the location and managed the logistical details. After so long without in-person fellowship, it was a true respite amid a long stressful season.
