New shelter opens for migrants in Mexico

On Wednesday FSW staff members Anyra Cano and Stephen Reeves traveled to the small village of La Modelo to celebrate the opening of a new building. The structure will soon be a shelter for migrants who hope to apply for asylum in the US and others who are seasonal workers in the nearby fields. It will be part of the Red de Albergues de Migrantes, Tierra de Oro which is led by longtime FSW partner Pastor Rosalío Sosa.

Joining the celebration was Mark Wingfield, Executive Director and Publisher of Baptist News Global. Mark and the BNG board visited La Modelo during their February board meeting when Rosalío shared his vision for a new building. Mark then appealed to his readership for funds which were quickly raised. When fully operational the shelter will replace the current shelter in nearby Palomas which is housed in a city owned facility. The new location will allow for further expansion and numerous other ministry opportunities.

It was a joyous occasion attended by dozens of migrants from numerous countries including Venezuela, Guatemala, Hondurans, Colombia, Dominican Republic and other parts of Mexico. The group celebrating the opening included the local municipal mayor, Ivoynne De La Hoya and friend of FSW, Abel Lopez, President and Founder of CLAY Student Leadership.

Fellowship Southwest is proud to partner with Rosalío in this ministry and grateful to Mark and the generosity of BNG readers.
