Statement from Fellowship Southwest by Dir of Programs and Outreach Rev. Anyra Cano on this morning’s shooting in Dallas
The story of the shootings at a Dallas immigration detention facility is still developing, but based on what we know, as of 1:30 pm Wednesday, we want to share this statement from Rev. Anyra Cano.
Two immigrants caught in the crossfire of U.S. political violence were killed by an American citizen. I don’t know much about these victims—and we probably never will. But as I think about who they could have been, I realize they could have been any immigrant in my community, my church, or my family. They could have been anyone who doesn’t “look American.” Their only hope was to find a better life in a country that claims to be better and to do justice for all.
They were children of God, now deeply grieved by their mothers, fathers, children, and communities.
This ungodly division and competition between what is “left” and “right” does no justice to innocent people made in the image of God. Today it was them. But if we continue to give in to the schemes of hatred, greed, division, self-righteousness, bigotry, and racism, tomorrow it could be us.
