Melissa Lucio has six more days
You have likely heard and read all about Melissa Lucio's tragic upcoming execution by the state of Texas, from us, from our partner Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, the Innocence Project (screenshot above captured from Instagram @innocenceproject quoting FSW pastor Jesse Rincones), from the media (NPR, CBS, John Oliver, and many others).
It's now an emergency. Where is everyone that can help? The Cameron County district attorney has yet to step in, though he indicated that he would. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has yet to rule on an application to stay her execution, though they might still, considering all the new evidence pointing to her innocence. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles has yet to make a recommendation on her clemency case, though they likely will on Monday. The governor has yet to intervene with a 30-day reprieve, though he can do so at any time.
If you need more details about her case, follow TCADP (@tcadp Instagram, @TCADPdotORG Twitter), Innocence Project (@innocenceproject Instagram, @innocence Twitter), and read this article by the Texas Tribune.
If you need help understanding why Christians might oppose the death penalty, read Stephen Reeves in Baptist News Global from last year and this week.
